Seam Placement Is a Design Decision

People ask whether their kitchen will have a seam. The more useful question is where, because on most runs the answer to the first one is yes.

Why they exist

Slabs are finite, usually around three metres of usable length after edge trim. A galley run longer than that, an L shape with two long legs, or a large island will exceed a single slab. Transporting and handling a single piece much beyond that length is also impractical, and the risk of cracking it in the doorway rises sharply.

Good placements

Through or immediately behind a sink cutout is the standard, because the cutout removes most of the length of the joint and what remains is short and sits at the back. An inside corner works because the eye reads the direction change rather than the line. Under a division between two visually separate zones, such as either side of a range, can also work.

Bad placements

The middle of an open uninterrupted span, where nothing distracts from it. Across a cooktop cutout, which leaves a narrow bridge of stone in the weakest position possible. Anywhere unsupported underneath, since a seam is a hinge until the epoxy cures and a moving joint will eventually open.

Matching across the joint

On a veined stone, the two pieces should be cut so the pattern continues across the seam. This requires the pieces to be adjacent in the slab and correctly oriented, which is a layout decision made before cutting. On a uniform speckled granite it hardly matters. On a strongly veined quartzite it is the difference between a joint you never notice and one you notice every day.

What a good seam looks like finished

Flush to the touch with no lip. Filled with epoxy tinted to the stone's background colour, not clear and not grey. Under three millimetres wide. Polished across so the sheen is continuous.

Ask for the seam positions on the layout drawing before you sign it off. It is a two minute conversation that determines a permanent feature of the room. More on the structural side in Seams, Cutouts, and Supporting an Overhang.

How many seams a kitchen actually needs

Fewer is not automatically better. A layout that eliminates a seam by using an enormous single piece may require a slab that costs considerably more, may be impossible to carry into the house, and puts the whole run at risk if it cracks in transit. A well placed seam is a better outcome than a heroic single piece that arrives damaged.

A typical kitchen with a perimeter run and an island has one to three seams: often one in the perimeter run, one at an inside corner if there is an L, and none in the island if it fits a single piece. Anything substantially more than that on a normal sized kitchen is worth asking about, since it may indicate the layout was optimised for slab yield rather than for appearance.

What a seam is made of

The two pieces are drawn together with seam setters, suction clamps with a screw mechanism that pulls the edges tight and level. The gap is filled with a two part epoxy tinted to match the stone's background, and on a veined stone a good fabricator will tint to the vein colour where the vein crosses. The joint is then scraped, cured, and polished flush.

The epoxy is structural as well as cosmetic, and it needs the pieces to be supported and immobile while it cures. A seam over an unsupported span, or a seam where the two cabinet runs underneath are at slightly different heights, is a seam that will be under stress for its whole life.

Why some seams open later

A properly executed seam on properly supported stone does not open. When one does, the cause is almost always underneath: a cabinet that has settled, a floor that has moved seasonally, or a run that was never level and was forced flat during install. The stone is rigid, so any movement in the substructure concentrates at the weakest line, which is the joint.

This is worth knowing because the remedy is not simply refilling the seam. Refilling a joint whose cause is a moving cabinet buys a year at best. The cause has to be addressed first, which is why a shop investigating an opened seam will look under the counter before they look at the counter.

Setting the expectation correctly

A good seam on a uniform stone can be genuinely difficult to find. A good seam on a strongly patterned stone is visible if you look for it and unnoticeable if you do not. A good seam on a solid dark stone, particularly a black, is the hardest of all to hide, because there is no pattern to distract and any epoxy colour mismatch has nowhere to disappear.

Ask the fabricator what to expect for your specific stone rather than in general. A shop that says the seam will be invisible on a solid black granite is either exceptionally good or is telling you what you want to hear, and it is reasonable to ask which.

Checking the seam at handover

Before the installers leave, inspect every seam deliberately. Run a fingernail across it in both directions: it should feel continuous with no step. Look along the joint from a low angle toward a light source, which shows any difference in polish across it. Check the epoxy colour against the stone at both ends of the joint, since a tint matched to one end can be visibly off at the other on a stone that shifts in tone.

Check the width along its full length. A joint that is tight at one end and open at the other indicates the pieces were not pulled together evenly and is worth raising immediately, while the installers and their equipment are still in the house.

Almost everything about a seam is easy to correct in the first hour and progressively harder afterwards. Fifteen minutes of inspection at handover is the highest return quarter hour in the project.
